Rather than suffering from continued pain and discomfort, purchase a new mattress and start on the road to a restful night’s sleep. Getting a good’s night sleep depends on your personal sleep patterns as well as the comfort of a mattress.

Avoid sleep problems with these tips on how to pick a mattress.

The goal of your mattress is to support your body in a neutral position. This means your spin and its curvature, along with your glute, heels, head and shoulders are supported in proper alignment.

A medium to firm mattress is good for a senior with lower back problems as well as a senior who is overweight because it is easier to get in and out of. An example of a very supportive, firm mattress is a latex mattress made out of either natural or synthetic rubber.

There are options with an innerspring mattress as to what type of top layer you require – pillow top, latex or memory foam.

Memory foam mattress responds to weight and temperature.

A senior looking for a mattress to contour to the shape of their body and to reduce pressure points as well as relieve pain, than memory foam is the correct choice. This is also a great choice for seniors who have a hard time getting comfortable, for those who suffer from muscle pain as well as chronic fatigue.

An air mattress is commonly used for spinal cord injuries.

This mattress (not a blow up air mattress) is used to prevent spinal cord injuries so that the mattress does not press on the same area of the body all night long, which then helps avoid skin break down as well.

An air mattress is good for two seniors who prefer different types of comfort – each side can be altered. They are not good for a senior who is looking for a firm mattress and it may cause back pains.

Adjustable beds bend and elevate at varying angles.

These are a great option for seniors who have trouble getting in and out of bed or for anyone who like to sit up and watch TV, read or just play on their phone in bed. They are also very effective for seniors with sleep apnea and acid reflux.

At this point, you may be asking yourself, why should I part with my bed that I have had for the last two decades? You may even think that isn’t worth it, you can’t sleep anyways. Well, stop thinking that way! Mattresses should be purchased at minimum every 8 years and most 15 years. If you have had your mattress for two decades, most likely it is making your sleeping problems worse.

Not only is your old mattress preventing you from sleeping, it also is covered with dust mites, fungus and many other germs that could be causing issues you aren’t even aware of. It is time to move on!
