Below are excellent tips on how to pack alone and to be prepared for moving day.

Start with a plan. This is very important and will help with the other tips listed. Write down all the items you need to pack, including the rooms in your home that need to be packed. Make sure you figure out how many packing supplies you will need.

Pack in stages. There is absolutely no need to get everything packed in one day. It is close to impossible, especially as a senior moving. Take a few days per room and keep track with a senior moving check list. If Monday through Wednesday you want to get the kitchen packed, then each day, write down how much you accomplished and if your goal of 3 days is unattainable then extend it – don’t over extend yourself.

• Pack in small, manageable boxes.
• Set a weight limit on each box.
• Only lift one box at a time.

Listen to your body. If you find that it is too much to pack a room in 3 days then make it 5 days. Don’t try to get everything finished in one day at the expense of over exhausting yourself. If you push yourself to the limit, you may not be able to pack for another couple of days due to recovering from over exertion. Take it easy and take plenty of breaks.

Pay attention to your surroundings. This means, be careful where you place household items and boxes, so that they are not in your way when walking. Boxes and furniture could turn into a tripping hazard.

• Do not place items on the stairs or at the bottom of the stairs.
• Do not place too many boxes on top of each other.
• Do not place boxes on the edge of a counter or table.
