First, you will need gather the following materials:

• Clear packing tape
• Shipping label
• Black Marker
• Cardboard
• Bubble wrap and/or moving blankets
• Clear plastic wrap

Next are steps to follow to protect the rocking chair for shipping.

1. Cut the piece of cardboard into large and small pieces. These pieces will be used to wrap different areas of the rocking chair. Start by wrapping the cardboard around the legs and feet of the rocker. Wrap the arm rests as well.

2. Using packing tape, secure the cardboard in place. Be sure not to place any tape directly on the surface of the rocking chair, it may damage the finish.

3. Place bubble wrap, moving blankets or both around the entire chair. Be sure to include the wood trim and use a good amount (don’t be shy) of padding to cover the entire chair. For extra cushion, wrap the chair twice and tape it in place.

4. Create a shipping label which includes your name (first and last name), address (the address your grandma is moving to) and a valid phone number. Be sure to write clearly and large enough for the movers to read. Using transparent tape, secure the label in place – this will also create a seal that is water resistant.

5. Contact a specialty shipping company for a free consultation to find out if the rocking chair should be boxed or crated. Be sure to also ask if you should box and crate the chair prior to the movers coming or if that is included in the price.

Tip – Take photos, before you wrap your grandma’s rocking chair and as soon as it arrives to its destination (before the movers leave). Doing so will provide proof if there is damage to the rocking chair. If there is noticeable damage, it must be reported immediately to the movers.
