The growing popularity of seniors using mobile phones and tablets is growing. Many developers focus all of their efforts on the younger generation with popular apps such as Angry Birds and Facebook, but there are an expanding number of seniors looking for apps that are gaining popularity.

Below are some great apps for seniors – games, educational, safety apps and more. All apps listed are free unless noted.

Words with Friends – This is an online version of Scrabble. Many seniors (and people of all ages) play the board game of Scrabble but may struggle to find someone to play with. Words with Friends connects players through the internet which means there is always someone to play against.

NPR/Pandora – NPR is an app for listening to NPR programming on your phone or tablet. They broadcast world news, radio broadcasts and text versions of NPR stories. Pandora is a free radio station with less commercials. They have many types of music stations.

iBooks/Amazon Kindle –This app is great for seniors because the font size is adjustable (making it larger and easier to read) along with the lighting. The lighting can be bright or dull, depending on where the book is read. This app is free on all apple products, and there is an Android version as well.

Luminosity Brain Trainer – Great app to keep the mind fresh. It includes 35 daily training sessions and other brain games. They have been designed to enhance your memory, attention and problem solving.

Med Watcher – This app is self-monitoring and helps track your own medical progress.

Red Panic Button (Paid) – This is for the senior living on their own. There is a button to press when you need help that sends a text message, along with your GPS location to a list of medical contacts.
